LAS VEGAS (October 31, 2022) — On Friday, Silver State Equality, Nevada’s statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, condemned vicious anti-transgender ads being aired on the Spanish-language radio station 99.3 FM, a subsidiary of Univision, Inc.
“These harmful ads must be taken down immediately,” said Silver State Equality Director André Wade. “This is a clear attempt to spread misinformation about the transgender/gender-expansive/non-binary community. We’ve seen it time and again, and this is just another instance of exploitation and disrespect aimed to stoke fear and division in an all-out attempt to gain power. These attacks will not undermine the LGBTQ+ community or our allies in Nevada and across the country. We will not stop until these bad-faith attacks on our community are ended and the work of true LGBTQ+ equality is achieved. We ask that members of our community and our allies call on Univision to stop the playing of these atrocious ads.”
“These anti-trans ads, targeting Spanish-speaking Nevadans, are not only a threat to our Latinx communities, but our democracy,” said Silver State Equality Communications Director Jorge Reyes Salinas. “These kinds of misinformation attacks attempt to diminish the voice and power of LGBTQ+ Latinx people. We cannot let these types of attacks on our community go unchecked. It’s disheartening that Univision would allow this kind of assault to air on their stations. They have a responsibility to the community to take these ads down and call them what they are — an attack on our LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities.”
The smear campaign, produced and paid for by MAGA Extremist Stephen Miller and his America First Legal Foundation, is 100 percent composed of disinformation, misleading Nevada’s Spanish-speaking voters about transgender rights, gender-affirming health care, and more.
Silver State Equality will fight any attempt to deny medically necessary, lifesaving, gender-affirming health care to Nevadans.
“We have decades of research and expert recommendations that directly contradict these political attacks,” said Wade. “They attempt to undermine the medical decision-making power that should be between health care providers and their patients. We will continue the fight to ensure every Nevadan has access to high-quality, welcoming, and affirming health care based on science, not political ideology.”
