LAS VEGAS — Silver State Equality, Nevada’s statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization, will honor Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum recording artist Paula Abdul and Nevada State Senator David Parks at the organization’s Inaugural Nevada Equality Awards on Wednesday, November 6, at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club located inside The LINQ Promenade.
“Paula Abdul has been both an LGBTQ icon and an outspoken advocate for our community and for people living with HIV — even when others remained silent,” said Silver State Equality State Director André C. Wade. “Senator Parks has been a trailblazing champion in Carson City, where he has provided crucial leadership for the LGBTQ community, passing some of Nevada’s most important civil rights protections during his career. We’re thrilled to honor their advocacy, and we look forward to celebrating the roles they’ve each played in the LGBTQ civil rights movement at the first-ever Nevada Equality Awards.”
Since she released her hit debut album “Forever Your Girl” three decades ago, legendary pop singer and dancer Paula Abdul has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ civil rights and social justice and enjoyed a loyal following within the LGBTQ community. At the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Abdul actively campaigned for funding to address the epidemic, raised money for HIV/AIDS organizations and worked tirelessly to combat stigma against people living with HIV. Since then, she has used her platform to advocate for full, lived equality for the LGBTQ community. Abdul’s new Las Vegas residency, “Paula Abdul: Forever Your Girl,” debuts at the Flamingo Las Vegas on Tuesday, October 22.
“I am honored and proud to be recognized by Silver State Equality,” said Abdul. “Since the time I began my career — the LGBTQ community has been invaluable to my success, and with that I vow to continue my support and advocacy for equal rights.”
Senator Parks was first elected to the Nevada Assembly in 1996, becoming the Nevada Legislature’s first openly gay member. Later elected to the Senate in 2008, Senator Parks currently serves as the dean of the legislature’s LGBTQ Caucus and has been a trailblazing advocate for LGBTQ Nevadans. During the 2019 legislative session, Silver State Equality worked behind the scenes in Carson City to help pass Senate Bill 284, sponsored by Senator Parks, which created an Advisory Task Force on HIV Exposure Modernization, charged with evaluating and researching how Nevada’s statutes and regulations on the criminalization of HIV transmission can be updated and modernized.
“It’s truly a wonderful personal honor to be recognized by Silver State Equality as a recipient of its first Nevada Equality Award,” said Parks.

Wade, who previously served as executive director of the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, Silver State Equality is affiliated with and supported by Equality California and Equality California Institute, which together comprise the nation’s largest statewide LGBQ civil rights organization.
